Holidays 2011: Latest Trends

Though the UK has finally emerged from a protracted recession, experts predict that the road to recovery will be a long and tortuous one. As you might expect, the numbers and the negative outlook have had an effect on nearly every sector of the economy. But nowhere has the news been more poorly received than in the travel industry.

Almost by it very definition, the travel industry is a cyclical industry. What we mean is that people tend to take a lot of vacations when the economy is booming and far fewer when it is under pressure. And since the UK economy was one of the last in Europe to limp out of recession, residents are not exactly primed for long, expensive holidays.

When it comes to holidays 2011 , the word of the day is neologism. If you have never heard of the term before, it simply means “new word”. And trends and weaknesses in the travel industry have given rise to at least two new neologisms that we are presently aware of.

The first one is called a staycation. As you can undoubtedly see, the word is a portmanteau, which means that it combines the words stay and vacation. What this means is that more and more UK residents are taking vacations at home, rather than booking trips overseas.

The second, far less popular neologism is called a soliday, which means that UK singles are currently much more likely to go on holiday alone, or to fly solo. This trend is the result of the airlines offering package deals to singles instead of families because airlines simply cannot afford to offer deals to entire families anymore.
