The Big Travel Favourites of the Twenty First Century

The farther the better - appears to be the mentality for avid travellers in the twenty-first century. Western Europe is dull and would hardly raise an eyebrow of interest nowadays; unless you are just hopping over the channel for a short city break, of course, that is definitely en vogue.

The big favourites of this relatively new century seems to be the countries that are considered to be off the beaten track. Even a holiday spent in Sydney furnished apartments seems to be so done before, today. No, the real big contenders are the countries that would have scared us to death to travel to, even only about twenty years ago.

In Asia, the fashionable destinations that seem to be springing up are countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. When we were much younger, we can all probably recall the horrific scenes that we saw from Cambodia: nowadays people visit the Killing Fields as one of the main tourist attractions.

South America is really grabbing people's attention and Machu Picchu, in Peru, must rank as one of the most iconic destinations for this part of the world. It does not stop here though, other countries like Bolivia and Ecuador (especially for the Galapagos) are drawing people in and inviting them to explore parts of the world that are so far removed from their own.

As we appear to be fast running out of places to explore on this planet, it will be interesting to see what countries open up their borders to tourism next.
